The scourge of Japanese beetles

How to neutralize this invader?

Although its presence is currently being felt on many golf courses in Quebec, Japanese beetles have been colonizing our province for several years. Since then, breeding has been active mainly in the south of the province, including the metropolitan region, for some fifteen years.

To recognize them, their physical features include a carapace, a head close to the body and antennae resembling pincers. They can measure from 1 to 3 centimetres. In Africa, one species can reach up to 10 centimetres, commonly known as the “Goliath” beetle! Finally, they can carry loads on their backs that are hundreds of times their own weight.

As they like the grassy areas of golf courses, you may also see them around your flower beds and in trees (fruit). Pay particular attention to any intrusion into your home or business. They can lodge themselves in your pipes and walls through small openings.

Prevention and control*

Chemical control can be an effective way of getting rid of a Japanese beetle infestation. Some products can eliminate 100% of larvae up to 250 days after use. A qualified technician authorized to use these products by Health Canada will be able to advise and guide you in managing and controlling your problem.
