If you’re dealing with Pharaoh ants, that is exactly the wrong move — and it’s precisely this species that causes the most damage when mishandled.
Not Your Average Ant
The Pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) is considered one of the most difficult species to control, for reasons that clearly set it apart from carpenter ants or pavement ants, the species most commonly seen in Quebec.
They live exclusively indoors. Unable to survive our winters outside, they settle permanently within heated structures — inside walls, false ceilings, electrical conduits, under bathtubs, and behind cabinets.
They have multiple queens and multiple nests at once. A mature colony can contain hundreds of thousands of individuals, spread across many distinct nests, each with its own reproductive queens. There isn’t a single nest to locate and destroy — there can be dozens.
They move freely between units. In apartment buildings, condos, co-ops, or social housing, they travel through walls, plumbing, and electrical pathways. Treating a single unit without accounting for neighbouring ones rarely produces a lasting result.
They’re also a public health concern. Pharaoh ants are recognized carriers of bacteria such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus, making them a particular concern in kitchens, restaurants, and healthcare settings.
Why Spraying Insecticide Makes Things Worse
This is the single most important thing to understand. When a Pharaoh ant colony perceives a threat — a repellent insecticide, a strong cleaning chemical, or any significant disturbance — it triggers a survival mechanism known as budding. The colony splits into several satellite colonies, each with its own queens, which then relocate to new areas of the building.
In practice, a problem that started in one kitchen can turn, within days, into an infestation spread across several bathrooms, bedrooms, and hallways — sometimes reaching neighbouring units as well. A single spray can turn one colony into twenty, scattered throughout an entire building.
For this reason, when Pharaoh ants are present, avoid:
- spraying insecticide on the ants or their trails
- using foggers or bug bombs
- cleaning ant trails with strong chemical products before a professional assessment
- using fast-acting, over-the-counter insecticides
- treating a single unit in a multi-unit building without coordinating with neighbouring units
The Right Approach: Baiting, Not Spraying
Effective treatment relies on a principle that runs counter to instinct: the ants themselves need to carry the product back to the nest. A slow-acting baiting program lets worker ants find the bait, consume it, and transport it back to the colony to feed the larvae and queens. Because the effect builds gradually over several days, the product has time to spread through the entire colony — including queens hidden deep inside walls — before the ants detect any danger.
A rigorous treatment typically includes:
- precise species identification, since Pharaoh ants are often mistaken for other small ants
- an assessment of activity zones throughout the entire building, not just the room where the problem was first noticed
- strategic bait placement at multiple points, using both sweet and protein-based baits, since the colony’s feeding preferences shift depending on its reproductive phase
- zero repellent spraying in the treated area
- follow-up visits to refresh baits and confirm elimination
As for timing, the first results are usually visible within 24 to 72 hours, but complete colony elimination typically takes 2 to 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the infestation. Patience is part of the treatment itself: stopping the program too early, or combining it with a spray insecticide, undoes the progress made so far.
Preparing for a Technician’s Visit
A few simple steps make the technician’s job easier and improve the odds of success.
Please do: empty kitchen cabinets and the pantry; note and report any observed areas of activity (trails, damp zones, under the sink, behind the fridge or stove); make sure the access panel under the bathtub is clear if it’s located inside a cabinet; report any known water leaks; notify immediate neighbours, especially in a multi-unit building.
Please do not: spray any insecticide product, even over-the-counter ones; clean visible ant trails with a strong chemical product before the visit; move bait stations once they’ve been placed; clean treated areas for the duration of the baiting program.
Rarely Solved in a Single Visit
An effective program usually involves two to three visits, spaced one to two weeks apart, to refresh baits and assess how the colony is responding. In more complex cases — multi-unit buildings, advanced infestations — a minimum 15-day follow-up is often needed to confirm complete elimination.
What About an Entire Building?
Because Pharaoh ants move freely between units, a coordinated approach across the whole building — involving the property manager and neighbouring residents — produces far better results than treating a single apartment in isolation. This is especially true in apartment buildings, condos, co-ops, social housing, and seniors’ residences.
