Bedbugs

Bedbugs, which had almost disappeared, have made a strong comeback by hiding in the luggage of people traveling around the world.

Bedbugs do not transmit diseases to humans. However, they can cause itching and lesions due to their bites. They can cause sleep problems and anxiety.

They feed on blood. The meal lasts a few minutes for adult bedbugs. They then digest it over a period of four to seven days. During this time, the bedbug hides mainly around the edge of the mattress and box spring. Depending on the degree of infestation, they can also be found hiding in cracks in the walls, floor and furniture and even behind paintings or pictures.

Under optimal conditions, adults can survive for up to a year without a blood meal.

PREVENTION

  • Inspect your room and other rooms when you are out and about.
  • Avoid picking up mattresses or furniture left at the side of the road.
  • In apartment buildings, bedbugs can travel from one apartment to another: be vigilant during the first few weeks!
  • At the hotel, do not place your luggage on the floor or on the bed. Store it on a luggage rack. When you return home, put all your laundry in the dryer at a high temperature for at least 30 to 45 minutes. In winter, in Quebec, the cold is your best friend. Leave your suitcase outside for 24 to 48 hours.

If you detect the presence of bedbugs, do not trivialize the situation because they will not leave on their own. To do this, it is necessary to quickly address a problem of intrusion or infestation of bedbugs in order to reduce the impact on health and the spread to other places.

Cockroaches

The German cockroach is the most common species of cockroach found in homes, restaurants and hotels all over the world. These cockroaches are generally introduced into these places by humans (in luggage, boxes, etc.).

Their presence does not necessarily mean that a place is unsanitary. Cockroaches and their eggs can enter a residence from various objects such as old furniture, foodstuffs, beer bottles, empty soft drinks as well as boxes used for transportation. Once inside a building, cockroaches move around and reproduce easily.

PREVENTION

Here are a few tips to follow as a preventive measure:

  • Keep pet food in closed containers. Do not leave food and water for pets lying around on the floor.
  • Keep food in plastic or glass containers. Avoid keeping it in paper or cardboard as cockroaches could chew on it or lay their eggs in it. Avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink.
  • Avoid sources of moisture (leaks in plumbing pipes, moisture produced by condensation from the refrigerator, glasses, plates, cups and other items).
  • Throw away old cardboard boxes and newspapers (they are a hiding place for cockroaches). Keep kitchen appliances (toasters, microwaves, ovens, stoves and refrigerators) clean, free of food and grease. Empty trash cans frequently, as food and moisture can attract cockroaches.

rodents

There are several different species of mouse in Quebec. They include the gray mouse, the deer mouse, the white-footed mouse and other species. Mice are easily distinguished from young rats by their small eyes and small paws.

Mice are curious, so they will cause damage just about everywhere. They feed mainly at night because they are generally very timid and therefore stay hidden during the day.

They can have up to eight litters in their lifetime. Females give birth to a litter of between six and eight mice.

Inside buildings, they live in attics, ventilation ducts, electrical rooms, on the floor behind cupboards or even in drawers.

In winter, mice look for food and warmth and take shelter indoors. The real risk is that these rodents can spread diseases that are transmissible to humans. In addition, they can cause a lot of material damage to electrical wires, insulation, etc.

PREVENTION

  • Keep the kitchen clean.
  • Block up all openings, especially those near the floor, as mice can squeeze through openings as small as a few millimeters (or ¼ inch).
  • Make sure that pet food is stored in airtight containers.

Insects

Carpenter ants chew wood to make their nests. However, they do not eat wood like termites. They feed on sugary foods, dog and cat food and other insects. Carpenter ants are generally found in wooded areas and nest in damp wood and tree stumps. They can also be found in homes (wooden doors, ceiling beams, floor joists, under bathtubs and in the attic.

There is a difference between the damage caused by carpenter ants and termites. Carpenter ants produce sawdust as a result of their chewing activities, while termites produce small granules.

In a house, carpenter ants can gather for various reasons.

  • A queen arrives in your house and establishes her colony
  • A satellite hive is being built, without a queen.
  • Materials or wood containing ants are brought inside the property.

In short, there are several reasons for their presence.

PREVENTION

Some simple tips can help you prevent an infestation of carpenter ants:

  • Leave firewood outside the house, away from the building. The same applies to wood or construction debris or materials.
  • Quickly manage problems caused by water infiltration into the property. Ants love warm, damp areas such as wooden structures damaged by water.
  • Keep food in sealed containers.
