Don’t let bed bugs ruin your return from vacation: 7 expert tips

We all dream of getting away, discovering new horizons, and returning home with our heads full of memories. But sometimes, an unwelcome guest can sneak into our luggage and turn our cozy home into a nightmare: bed bugs upon returning from a trip.

As an expert in bed bug extermination for many years, I have seen numerous cases where these tiny creatures have been brought home after a trip abroad or even just a short trip. Most of our clients always ask us the same question: “How can I avoid bringing bed bugs home after a trip?” This is a legitimate concern, as an infestation can quickly become a major problem, resulting in unpleasant bed bug bites and considerable stress.

Fortunately, there are simple and effective steps you can take to minimize the risks. No need to be paranoid, just be a little smart and take a few precautions. Here are my top 7 tips for a surprise-free return from your trip:

1. Be vigilant when using public transportation

Whether you’re on a train, subway, or bus, avoid letting your suitcases come into direct contact with other passengers’ luggage. Bed bugs are great travelers and can easily move from one bag to another. If possible, keep your luggage on your lap or on a luggage rack away from others.

2. Choose your seat carefully

When traveling on public transportation, sit away from bags and luggage that do not belong to you. Seat cushions can also be potential hiding places, so a quick glance never hurts.

3. Thorough inspection upon arrival at your destination

This is THE golden rule! Before you even unpack your bags, thoroughly inspect your hotel room, Airbnb, or rental. Focus on the bed: lift the mattress, check the box spring, bed frame, and bedding. Look for small black spots (their droppings), shed skin, or even the insects themselves.

4. Don’t neglect other furniture

Bed bugs don’t just hide in beds! Take a close look at chairs, couches, and other upholstered furniture. That’s often where they hide until nighttime.

5. Keep your luggage away from the bed

Once you have inspected your luggage, remove it from the bedroom. Do not place it under the bed or on the floor near the bed. Ideally, place it on a metal luggage rack, a high shelf, or even in the bathroom.

6. Wash and dry your clothes as soon as you return home.

As soon as you walk through the door, wash all your travel clothes (even those that haven’t been worn) in hot water. Then, and this is very important, put them all in the dryer on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Heat is bed bugs’ number one enemy!

7. Leave your suitcases outside

If the weather permits, leave your suitcases outside for a few days when you return from your trip. Extreme cold or heat can help eliminate any intruders. If this is not possible, store them in a garage or an isolated room in your home.
